Information for Families
University Studies/University Academic Advising Center has a mission: to help new undergraduate students explore degree programs and select a major, and to help upperclass students transition from one major into another. As part of our mission, we:
- facilitate each student's successful transition to the University,
- support academic excellence,
- assist students in exploring their interests and skills, and
- make appropriate referrals.
How can families help?
Families can encourage their students to . . .
- Explore different majors and careers! Take an interest-inventory test, research various career fields, take classes that interest them, and try various options through internships and summer jobs.
- Get involved at Virginia Tech! Join campus and leadership activities within student organizations, faculty research, and volunteer activities.
- Participate in an internship. Expand the learning process through an internship that will further explore a major, build the resume, and, possibly, launch a new career.
- Make independent, well informed decisions.
- Be responsible for their education.
- Visit their academic advisor on a regular basis.
What else can families do?
- Sign up for UAAC's Family e-news listserv.
- Inform yourselves on what your student may be thinking, doing, and feeling by reviewing our monthly newsletter.
- Learn about services available on campus so that you can suggest appropriate referrals should your student call with a concern.
- Visit our Frequently Asked Questions page to see common questions your students ask their advisors.
- Visit the Division of Student Affairs page for parents and families for more information about a variety of topics.
