What
is the Math Emporium?
The Math Emporium is where the on-line Math courses are held.
The facility is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Once you
have met at the scheduled time on the first day of class,
you do not have to go to the Emporium at any specific time.
You just have to make sure you have met all of the deadlines
for the course. In addition to the on-line math courses, they

How do I know if my AP/IB credit is equivalent to a Virginia Tech course?

How do I have Transfer or AP/IB credit sent to Virginia
Tech?
For transfer courses you will need to contact the institution
where you took the course(s) and have them send in your transcript
to the Registrar’s Office.
To have your AP/IB scores sent, you will need to contact either
your High School or the testing facility and request the information
be sent to the Registrar’s office (Office
of the University Registrar, 250 Student Services Building).
If you receive credit for courses you are registered for in
the fall, adjustments to your class schedule can be made at

What is Advanced Standing?
For ENGLISH: Some students are exempted from
the first semester (ENGL 1105) and granted Advanced Standing
on the basis of three scores: SAT Me Verbal, SAT II writing,
and Standardized High School Class Rank. Advanced Standing
students fulfill their Freshman English requirement with the
single advanced course into which they are placed: ENGL
1106 or Honors ENGL H1204. If Advanced Standing
students complete the assigned advanced course at Virginia
Tech with a C- or better in the first enrollment, they receive
pass/fail credit for ENGL 1105, the course from which they
are exempted.
For MATH: Students are exempted from Math1015
and granted Advanced Standing for the course if they meet all
the following criteria:
- Must have
at least 4 years of secondary level math (Algebra I and
above),
- Must
have Math SAT score of 570 or higher, or ACT score of 25 or higher
- Must
be in the upper 30% of their High School Rank
- Advanced Standing credit may be validated in one of the following ways:
- With a final grade of C- or better earned in the first attempt of Math 1016, 1205, 1206, 1525, 1526, or 2015

With transfer credit for Math 1205 or 1206
- With AP or IB credit for Math 1205
- With a seccessful credit-by-exam in Math 1016, 1205 or 1206 taken durng the first week of the semester

is the Curriculum for Liberal Education (formerly the University Core Curriculum)?
Virginia Tech has general requirements of all graduates of this university, now called the Curriculum for Liberal Education, and formerly called the University Core Curriculum. This curriculum has several content areas,
each with a specialized set of goals that all courses in that
area are expected to meet. The course selections made from the content
areas will create the general education program of study. Each
student must complete these required courses before graduation.
Guides are published online listing courses in each content area; you should follow the Guide published in the year you entered Virginia Tech.

Why do I have a New Student hold on my account?
A "New Student" hold is placed on each beginning student’s
Hokie Spa account. It will be removed once you attend Orientation.
When will I get an advisor?
As soon as assignments are made, you will receive an email, from your advisor, sent to your Virginia Tech email address.
