What to Expect at Orientation

Math Emporium

Math Emporium

Orientation is a 2-day process. You will meet with an advisor on the second day (Day 2) to review your schedule and make any necessary changes. You cannot make changes to your class schedule until you meet with an advisor at Orientation!

Getting to the Math Emporium

  • University Studies’ Day 2 sessions are held at the Math Emporium.
  • Directions to the Math Emporium: The Math Emporium is located off Prices Fork Road on University City Blvd., inside the University Mall. At the intersection of Prices Fork and University City Blvd. you will see a new building on the northwest corner named "University Gateway Center" which houses a bank (BB&T) and US Cellular: the name of the building is prominently displayed on the central rounded facade, and signs for BB&T and US Cellular are displayed on both sides. After turning onto University City Blvd., the University Mall will be on your left, just past the University Gateway Center.

**(See Map provided by the Math Dept. & the Orientation Map)**

  • Parking: There is a parking lot in front of the Math Emporium. If space is not available there, another option would be the new parking garage between the University Gateway Center and the University Mall. To get to this garage, it would be easiest for you to turn off of Prices Fork Road onto Glade Road, which is just one short block west of University City Blvd. The entrance to the garage will then be immediately on your right.
  • University Mall: Come in through the main doors, and turn left to find the University Studies table and the Math Emporium. Check in at the desk before proceeding to the Emporium.

Procedures at the Math Emporium:

  • Students are RANDOMLY assigned either an 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. time slot on Day 2. You must come at your assigned time!
  • Bring your nametag with you to your Day 2 session since it indicates your assigned time. If you do not bring your nametag, you will be automatically placed in the 10 a.m. time slot . We cannot accommodate changes to this time placement due to the large number of entering students.
  • After checking in at our table, you will be placed in a group based on whether you have a particular major in mind or are exploring your options. All students, regardless of intended major, receive the same advising! Dividing students this way facilitates the advising process.

  • During this session you will not only work on your schedule for the fall but will also learn about University Studies, university and major requirements, meeting with your advisor, and much more.
  • Refer to your Orientation brochure as a guide for what to bring with you to Orientation!
  • Parents, guardians, and other family and friends will meet with the Director of University Studies while you are developing your schedule independently with the help of an advisor.  Encourage your family to review our Family Orientation Page, so they also will know what to expect at orientation.
