Authorization to Take Courses Elsewhere
Note: Only UNIVERSITY STUDIES students should use this form, we cannot approve these courses for you--only your major can.
(You
do not need to submit this form for courses listed in the VCCS Transfer Guide.) ALL
TRANSFER COURSES are subject to the Academic policies outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog.
If you plan to take a course at another institution and have the credit transfer back to Virginia Tech you should always discuss this with your advisor well in advance of enrollment. Then you will need to complete
the form below and submit it no later than one month prior to your enrollment at another
institution. Following is some information of importance.
- If attending a Virginia Community College, refer to the VCCS Transfer Guide (www.registrar.vt.edu, click Transfer Guide). If the course(s) you wish to take is listed in the Guide it is approved for transfer and no additional approval/paperwork is necessary. However, on completion of the course(s), request an official transcript be sent to the Virginia Tech Registrar, 250 Student Services Bldg, so credit can be awarded.
- If attending a 4-year institution in Virginia or any out-of-state institution, refer to the Transfer Equivalency Database (TEDB) as a starting point (www.registrar.vt.edu, click Transfer Guide, then Transfer Equivalency Database). If the course(s) you wish to take are listed, complete the electronic Authorization to Take Courses at Another Institution (ATC) Form found on the University Studies website (www.uaac.vt.edu). If not listed, you will still need to complete the ATC Form and additionally you will need to provide a course description for each course you wish to take. A representative from University Studies will review your request and respond to you via email regarding approval. If approved and upon completion of the course(s), request an official transcript be sent to the Virginia Tech Registrar, 250 Student Services Bldg, so credit can be awarded.
Not all courses taken elsewhere will earn Virginia Tech credit:
-- If you want to major in Engineering (including Computer Science), download and complete the College's authorization form, and take it to 212 Hancock. Approval by the College of Engineering is required for these courses even if they are listed elsewhere for VT credit.
-- If you want to major in Biochemistry, all required biochemistry courses must be taken here at Virginia Tech.
